For me, the stories began back in 1966 in the Imperial Guardsmen. There, I met the “loud old guy” that instructed our horn line who always seemed to be yelling about something. Joining Melrose in 1980, Bucky became not only an instructor; but also a friend. So many stories have occurred through the years! Tom taught me how to play a baritone then helped me become one of “Bucky’s mellophones.” He helped celebrate Mom’s 60th birthday by jumping out of a birthday cake for her, helped celebrate my wedding by arranging music played by the Melrose Blackhawks, being there to support my family through our family’s losses, and arranging a song for the Blue Eagles Alumni when we were in need of a new song. There are countless memories with Melrose. From the day he shaved his goatee, to the day we left Bucky on the bus with the beer when the bus broke down (what were we thinking?), to the countless Melrose family picnics and parties - they all bring a host of memories that will be talked about as long as two or more Blackhawks meet! Tom truly inspired kids of all ages to get involved in Drum & Bugle Corps by teaching music and the love of Drum Corps. Most of all, he kept us young! Thank you Tom for sharing your musical talents, your friendship, and all the memories our time together allowed! To Althea and all of Tom’s family – thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
