Obituary for Jean Mary Buchberger (Remi)

Parlin
Jean Mary Buchberger age 80, of Parlin lost her courageous battle with cancer on May 29th, 2013 at The Center for Hope Hospice with her loving and devoted family by her side. Born in Brooklyn, NY on August 4, 1932, she resided in New York, NY until moving to the Parlin section of Sayreville in 1955.
Mrs. Buchberger was a communicant of St. Bernadette’s R. C Church in Parlin, where she was an active parishioner as a member of the alter rosary society, prayer group, Lector and Eucharistic Minister. She served as the parish bookkeeper from 1986 until her passing. She continued to work at the parish rectory while undergoing both chemo and radiation treatments.
Not only was she the matriarch of her family she was the matriarch of the parkway homes section of Sayreville (Parlin). She was one of the last surviving “original residents” of the neighborhood. Mrs. Buchberger lead a group of parents to fight the then Sayreville Mayor Mary M. Kerr to provide safe transportation and walkways from parkway homes to the “new” Sayreville Junior High School on Washington road. While the battle may have been lost to Sayreville politics of the day, she fought as she died with courage, dignity and grace.
Over the years she loved her dogs, Rocky, Rocky-II, Roxy and Geo; made the world’s best meatballs and sauce; Christmas Eve at her house was a tradition; made her weekly excursions to Atlantic City; could play Blackjack and Pinochle with the best of them; had the cleanest house on the planet; loved her neighbors and co-workers like family; is very proud of the men her sons have become; is even prouder of the man her grandson is becoming. She was an inspiration to all that knew her.
The daughter of the late Salvatore and Francis (Bonanno) Remi, she attended PS-1 and Seward Park High School, New York, NY. She married Lyle John Buchberger 2/23/1952. Their first son Robert S. Buchberger, Matawan, NJ was born in 1955. Their second son Dr. Dale J. Buchberger Auburn, NY was born 1962.
She received her High School Equivalency Diploma 9/13/1969. She worked as a telephone operator for ATT/NYTC from 1948 to 1953; Mail order supervisor for E & B Marine Perth Amboy, NJ from 1972 to 1977; Bookkeeper for AAMCO Transmissions Marlboro, NJ from 1977 to 1978; Bookkeeper for WRS trims from 1978 to 1980; Bookkeeper/owner of Buchberger’s Citgo/Sunoco 1979 to 1987; She was a member of the Parkway Homes Association, Samsel School PTA, VFW 7508 Ladies Auxiliary, and Sayreville Little League.
She is predeceased by her Husband Lyle J. Buchberger, father Salvatore Remi, mother Francis (Bonanno) Remi, and her sister Grace (Remi) French.
She is survived by, Son Robert S. Buchberger, BSN, BFA, U.S. Army CPT (retired) (Domenick Mauriello), Matawan, NJ, Son Dr. Dale J. (Elaine Bassetti) Buchberger, Auburn, NY and a Grandson Zachary N. Buchberger Auburn, NY.
