Obituary

Jerry Ust- Director of Recreation Sayreville

Jerry Ust, 66, of Sayreville, NJ passed away unexpectedly October 5, 2020 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Eileen, his daughter Janet Cook (Billy), son David (Jessica), his grandchildren Jackson and Ella Cook and Benjamin Ust. He is also survived by his brother Jack (Pattiann) and many nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Sayreville War Memorial High School and TCNJ. After many years operating his own business, he became the Recreation Director for his hometown. He was always an active member of the Sayreville Athletic Association, coaching both his son and daughter through their many years of sports as well as being a proud spectator at his grandson’s foray into baseball and soccer.

He took great pride in Sayreville and enjoyed every minute of planning and executing the many events throughout the years and expanding the number of programs each year.

Always one to enjoy people, this job was his true calling. He could be found at high school games all the way down to tball just to ensure things were going smoothly.

Jerry was a lover of all sports and was a diehard Cowboy and Yankee fan, spending countless hours “coaching” from his recliner, loudly criticizing all that was happening. He also took up the sport of golf when his softball game wasn’t up to par. He was a member of Glenwood Country Club and Forsgate Country Club where he made friends easily and enjoyed every moment of golf.

Jerry had a heart of gold and sadly, it was his heart that could not keep up with everything he wanted to do. Please, with his story, take the time to love your family, be true to your friends, and spread kindness wherever you may be.

Due to Covid19 precautions, services will be private at this time, held under the direction of the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sayreville B.I.C. 251 Jernee Mill Road Sayreville, NJ 08872.

My condolences to Eileen and the Ust family. I met Jerry when we were young teenagers And we became fast friends. I remember the days of playing in the Sayreville men's football league Acting like we were still kids and beating up our bodies. Afterwards we head to the Bottle Stop and relax and hoist a few . We also had baseball softball and Basketball too. I remember Jerry with that big smile, a funny comment or joke to pick you up, and a laugh when needed to break the tension. I would see Jerry around town all the time, stop for quick chat maybe reminisce and always say we have to get together but somehow something always got in the way. It's a shame now because after that devastating news we won't be seeing each other anymore and now I wish we hadn't taken too much for granted. Jerry was a great guy. Always talked about his family especially his grandkids. Always a smile and a greeting. And always there to lend a hand whenever help was needed. I remember when my family members had passed Jerry was always around there to try and ease your pain. Just a great guy who went too soon.. Love you bro. RIP

Eileen- i was floored to hear the passing of Jerry. He was an amazing man, a great husband and a true friend to our family. My father is devastated and words don’t say enough to how much his friendship meant to my father. Jerry was truly family to him. I know my dad spoke to Jerry at least once a day. I had the pleasure of being around Jerry thru all my years at the fields and at the many functions he attended. I am truly so sad for you and your family. I do wish GOD looks over you and helps your family during this most drastic time. We are here for you and yours always. Rip Jerry. You are truly missed.

By knowing that Jerry touched many of hearts and made many of friends is knowing what a great person he was. That terrific smile was infectious. He was a true leader in everything that he did. Most of all he always talked of the love he had for his family. Our prayers are with Jerry as he enters heaven. God bless.
