HM1 James "Doc" Smith, USN, Retired
CDR Principe became Phil to myself and the rest of the 4th Medical Batallion Detachment 4 when we ran him ragged on a big patient physical drive at 6th Motor Transport Battalion Headquarters in Red Bank. That weekend, we must have processed just about every Marine there and yet, Phil was always ready for more. He recognised both the unit's clinical experience and respected out time in service, even though he outranked us all. When we were activated for Iraq, Phil ran the intake area for the Battalion, and everything hummed right along. From a personal standpoint, I picked up Phil a couple times and even took him out to the field a few times, which he really loved. Then, 2006, Phil stayed with my dad, Reverend Norman E. Smith, for an afternoon when I had to deal with some family paperwork. He also made sure my mother, Gloria Smith, was well treated when she had to be hospitalised because of an erratic heartbeat. I know Phil had his demons, but he was always there. He epitomised the values of Honour, Courage and Commitment better than most. No mater what one might think of him, Phil was would never leave your side, once committed. Going to miss you old friend. Rest in Peace. Semper Fi.
