Obituary for Edward A "Dr Jaz" Jasionowski

Edward A "Dr Jaz" Jasionowski
Edward (Dr. Jazz) Jasionowski Age 94 of Sayreville passed away peacefully on Sunday August 7, 2016 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in South River, NJ, the eldest male of nine siblings, to Marianna Truskowska and Walenty Jasionowski. He attended local schools until the family moved to a farm in East Brunswick. He graduated from South River High School and Rutgers University ‘43. During WWII he attended Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia under the army’s special training program. During his senior year, he became the night physician at a small hospital in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, he served his internship and residency at St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick. There he met nurse, Jane Rutzel, who
subsequently became his life’s companion.

He started a family practice in Sayreville. During the Korean War, he
joined the US Public Health Service and was assigned to the Menominee
Indian Reservation in Wisconsin. His rank on retiring was Senior Surgeon.
After returning to private practice, he formed the Sayreville Medical
Group and restricted his practice to Obstetrics & Gynecology. The group
eventually had a satellite in Old Bridge and had eighteen members (which
dissolved shortly after he retired). He was on the staff of the following hospitals: St. Peter’s, Middlesex (now RWJH), and South Amboy Memorial.

He was an assistant professor of OB-GYN at Rutgers Medical School,
now part of NJ College of Medicine and Dentistry. He enjoyed teaching
medical students and residents and was voted “Best Teacher” several times. In the course of his practice he performed over 9000 deliveries. He authored several articles in medical journals. He was President of the Middlesex County Medical Society and for years was a delegate to the state medical convention. He also was a member of the AMA and NJ OB-GYN Society. After fifty years of practice, he retired at the age of 75. His success was based on being an ‘Old Time Physician’ where the patient came first.
After retiring, he became a member of the Board of Education in an effort to get the state to amend & consolidate cost initiatives across counties.

His hobby was growing rhododendrons and he was a director of the
American Rhododendron Society. He was credited with three new varieties
of rhododendrons, registered with the Royal Rhododendron Society. His
favorite rhododendron, which he named after his wife, was “My Jane.”
Jane and Jazz summered in Normandy Beach, where he was a long time
member of the NB Yacht Club. They enjoyed traveling, and did so
worldwide, particularly in St. Thomas, USVI. He was also an avid hunter
and fisherman.

He is predeceased by his wife Jane in 2011, his son Edward in 2009 and his siblings Benjamin Jasionowski, Ralph Jasionowski, Frances Milka, Mary Jasionowski, Florence Luteran, Helen Roginski and Clair Pilecki.
Surviving are his children Dr. Patricia (of FL), James (Sayreville, NJ), Richard and his wife Cathy (Fair Haven, NJ), William (Point Pleasant Beach, NJ) Elizabeth Miller and her husband Eric (Bel Aire, MD). His daughter in law Sandy Jasionowski of Monroe. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, as well as a younger sister, Lorraine Alexander, of South River.

Funeral services will be held Thursday 8:45am from the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home 15 Cherry Lane Parlin followed by a 9:30am mass at Our Lady of Victories R. C. Church in Sayreville with burial to follow at New Calvary Cemetery, Parlin.
