Obituary for Anna Puchalski

Sayreville
Anna M. Puchalski, affectionately called “Aunt Annie” by her devoted nieces and nephews, age 94 of Sayreville, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning November 12, 2015 after having been in ill health for the past few years. Daughter of the late Alexander and Stella (Wilczek) Puchalski, Anna was born in Jersey City on September 19, 1921 and resided in Sayreville all her life. Anna’s father immigrated to the USA from Kadlubowska Bielsk, Poland. Her mother was a US citizen having been born in Sayreville. Anna endured poverty and hardships while growing up during the Great Depression, and when she came of age, she quit school and went to work in order to help support her parents.
Like her mother before her, Anna kept house the best she could. She was a very good cook and baker, preparing delicious meals and baking all sorts of delectable goodies.
Due to an influx of clothing being imported to the United States from other countries, A.Berman Whitehead Ave., South River, NJ, the garment factory Anna had been employed by for 38 years as floor girl, trimmer, inspector of work completed, time keeper, payroll dispatcher, recorder of employees’ work output, packer, and shipper, went out of business leaving Anna without a job. Anna’s brothers kept reassuring her that she need not seek further employment as she had enough to do at home. Anna was a member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of American Local #169. In her later years, Anna sometimes lamented the passing away of so many of her co-workers and that of the factory’s owners, Anna Berman and her son, Bill Berman, with whom she had an excellent rapport.
A devout Roman Catholic, Anna was a lifelong communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka R.C. Church in Sayreville. In her younger years, Anna was not only an accomplished seamstress sewing clothing for herself and family as well as various household articles, but also an adept crocheter crafting items ranging from dollies, antimacassars, pot holders, scarves, hats and stoles to stuffed animals and toys, afghans, baby blankets, bedspreads and decorations for all holidays such as the beautiful Christmas tree ornaments for which she received many compliments. In the past, Anna liked to do crossword puzzles and to care for her many varieties of house plants. Anna enjoyed going to the movies at the Colony Theater on Main Street, Sayreville until its demise in the mid 1950’s. By regularly attending the Colony Theater’s “Dish Nights”, on which patrons were presented with a piece of china ware, Anna was able to collect service for eight of both the Tulip Pattern and the Rose Pattern china plus all the accompanying pieces. During radio’s hey-day, listening to her favorite programs was a must, and so was watching many of those wonderful programs during the Golden Age of TV. Not caring too much for the many newer TV programs, Anna preferred instead to watch re-runs of older shows.
During World War II, Anna wrote frequently to her brothers, John and Joseph, who were in the service overseas, and sent them packages containing many of the items they were in need of most from toiletries to canned goods such as SPAM. Anna also did the same for her brother Ray when he was stationed in Korea during the Korean War. Even though Anna’s brothers were in the midst of raging wars, they were still able to send her many lovely gifts from abroad such as fancy handkerchiefs, cosmetics, perfume, jewelry, table and bed linens, bric-a-brac.
Anna was also predeceased by her sister Mary Puchalski, her brothers Joseph Puchalski and John Puchalski, her sisters in law Sophie (Szostak) Puchalski and Lois (Poppre) Puchalski and her beloved niece Barbara (Puchalski) Tureaud.
Anna is survived by her brothers who lived with her in Sayreville, Raymond Puchalski and Edward Puchalski , her caregiver, her sister in law Bernadine “Deannie” (Czernikowski) (Lichtenstein) Puchalski of Sayreville, her nieces and their husbands Christina (Puchalski) and Anthony Warchut of Manchester CT, and Diana (Puchalski) and David Suscewicz of Port Richey FL, her nephews and their wives Robert and Leigh Ann (Vibbert) Puchalski of Madison TN, John and Frances (Mikulic) Puchalski of Flemington, Jeff Tureaud of Freehold, her great niece and husband Melissa Nicole (Puchalski) and Albert Rich Dorsey IV of Brentwood TN, and her Wilczek and Puchalski cousins.
