Obituary for William J Gawron Sr.

William J. Gawron Sr., age 69, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Bill was a brave and dedicated police officer with the Sayreville Police Department with 30 years of service and retired at the rank of Captain. During his time with the department, he served as Emergency Management Coordinator for six years and was a NJ Certified Firearms Instructor. After his retirement, Bill went on to work as an Investigative Specialist with the New York Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he worked on several high profiled cases. Bill was a member of the FBI SWAT and TOC teams. Bill was past president of Sayreville PBA Local #98 and a member of Local #9 Retired Police & Firefighters, NJ State PBA Local #600, FOP Chapter #053, a member of the South Amboy Elks Lodge #784, and a life member of the NRA. Bill obtained his Masters Degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time at his hunting property in Avoca, NY, where he made many friends and acquaintances. Bill also enjoyed pheasant hunting in Iowa with his best buddy, Zipper.

Bill is predeceased by his parents, Alfred Sr. and Santa Maria Tarallo Gawron. He is survived by his wife, Debra Konopka Gawron, his son William Jr. and his fiancé Gayla Holoway, his stepson Christopher Konopka and his wife Veronica, his brothers George and his wife Nora, Alfred Jr. and his fiancé Ann Mackiel, John and his partner Steve Zihala, Randy Stratton and his wife Kelly, Michael and Terri Gawron, his granddaughters, Brianna and Chelsea Gawron, his in-laws Raymond and Shirley Konopka, and his sisters-in-law Donna Smith, Diane Schultz, and Dawn Dykeman, several nieces and nephews, and many friends and colleagues.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill’s name to St. Stanislaus School Endowment Fund, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or the Make a Wish Foundation.

Funeral services will be on Monday, May 8 at 8:15 a.m. from the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin, NJ, with a mass at 9:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Sayreville. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Burial Park in East Brunswick.
