Obituary for Stephanie Kapusta

Stephanie Kapusta
Stephanie Kapusta, East Brunswick
11/10 /22 – 02/16/19

Stephanie Sciora Kapusta, 96, of East Brunswick passed into glory on February 16, 2019 with her family by her side. Stephanie was born in New York City, becoming the third child to her parents, Andrew and Mary Sciora. Being somewhat of a tomboy, her childhood was filled with games like kick-the-can, jacks and jump rope. Although she had a fear of heights in her adult years, she loved to tell stories of how she would jump from the rooftop of one NYC building to the next or how she would hang out of a sixth story window so she could clean it on the outside.

Those good days quickly turned to bad with the coming of the Great Depression. Jobs were scarce, money was scarce and food was scarce. But, through hard work and prayer, her family pulled through. It was during those rough years that she formed bonds with friends that would last a lifetime. All have predeceased her, and in typical Steffie fashion, she will be the last to arrive at their reunion.
Then came the war. Steffie, a young lady now, supported the war effort by joining the work force. One of her jobs was being a secretary and translator for a merchant shipping company. Her favorite perk was when a visiting marine would thank her with a pair of sought after silk stockings. She was active in the Polish-American clubs, organizing dances and dinners for both US and allied service men who were in the city on leave. The end of the war started a new chapter in her life. She met a soldier and stole his heart. She married Edwin Kapusta in 1947. Ten years and two kids later they decided they wanted to raise their growing family in the country, so they left the City they loved and moved to East Brunswick, NJ. In the following years, two more children joined the family. Being home with her children was very important to her so Steffie got a job with the East Brunswick Board of Education cafeteria system, working primarily in the high school.

Steffie loved spending time with her family, especially up in Vermont during the summer months. She loved winning board and card games. She was an avid baker and cook. She loved to craft, crochet and knit. She could spend hours on end doing jigsaw puzzles. Her favorite pastime, however, was looking for bargains and treasures at yard sales and flea markets.

Like all humans, Stephanie was not a perfect woman. But, she was perfect in the eyes of her children, Thomas (Lynn), Dennis (Cammy), Robert, and Christene (Frank Reale). She taught them empathy and compassion. She taught them to never judge people by how they looked, but rather by how they treated you and others. She shared her love of animals by having a home filled with dogs, cats and other critters. She taught them the words like respect, honor and grace. She always encouraged them and always supported them. She taught them that life doesn’t always have to be serious, to have fun and to laugh. She was always there to comfort and offer support, even when they didn’t quite deserve it. And most of all, she taught them the true meaning of unconditional love. She raised them to be the people they are today and for that, they are forever grateful.

Stephanie is predeceased by her parents, her husband Ed, her brother Emile Sciora and sister Josephine Kuss. In addition to her children, she is survived by three granddaughters, Kayla, Kaitlyn and April, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her beloved cats Max and Yoda.
