Obituary for Ruthamma Chacko (Thomas)

Ruthamma Chacko (Thomas)
Ruthamma M. Chacko (born Ruthamma Thomas) was born on July 25, 1936 to Oommen and Annamma Thomas in Vathikulam, Mavelikara, India. She was called into the eternal abode on April 13, 2023 in her home in East Brunswick, NJ. She was the eldest of 5 children. She has a nursing diploma from Mayo General Hospital, Maharashtra State. After graduating, she worked at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

In November 1967, Ruthamma emigrated from India to the United States. She was sponsored by Beth Israel Medical Center in New Jersey and began working as a Registered Nurse there. Then, Ruthamma married the Rev. Fr. Dr. Mathew C. Chacko and they started a family in Hartford, Connecticut in 1970.

In 2000, Ruthamma and Mathew Achen founded Saint Basileous Gregorious Orthodox Church. They started with a few families and then, over the years, grew it into an active and spirited congregation. During her time at the church, Ruthamma was a Sunday School teacher, organized various events, was part of Martha Maria Samajam, and was an overall leader.

Ruthamma enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. She was very close to her family and looked forward to family gatherings. If there was music, she was dancing and never wanted to leave the party. Ruthamma was deeply rooted in her faith, always praying for her family and friends.

She is predeceased by her parents Oommen and Annamma Thomas and her brother Joseph Thomas. She is survived by her husband, Rev. Fr. Dr. Mathew C. Chacko; their children: Jacob Chacko spouse Moni Chacko and Susan Chacko; and their grandchildren: Elizabeth Chacko, Hannah Baby, Andrew Chacko, and Emma Baby, and her siblings Varkey Thomas, Lilly Varghese, and John Thomas and many nieces and nephews.
