Obituary for Robert J "Bob" Sullivan

Robert J "Bob" Sullivan
Rochester, NY

Robert J. Sullivan, P.E. died January 1, 2016 at the age of 62 after a courageous seven-year battle with prostate cancer. Predeceased by parents William F. and Rose M. Sullivan and brother-in-law Walter Kiel. Survived by beloved children Erin K. of Brooklyn, NY and Sean M. of Detroit, MI; brother William F. (Barbara) of Rochester, sisters Mary E. (Gerard) Felice, Margaret A., and Rosemary Kiel, all of New Jersey; along with many nieces and nephews. Bob was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Sayreville, NJ. In 1980 he relocated to Rochester and worked at Eastman Kodak until 1999, when he joined the staff of Optimation Technology, Inc. for the next 16 years. He had little formal education beyond high school, but was a self-taught man who studied for and passed the licensing requirements to become a professional engineer. His work ethic and discipline were further evidenced in his commitment to weight lifting and bodybuilding, activities that he began in his youth and continued until his illness prevented it.

Bob was an avid car buff who completed a much-admired restoration of a 1968 Dodge Dart while undergoing his extended cancer treatments. He also travelled frequently in later years to national parks and baseball games. He loved good food and good wine, and was an accomplished cook. Above all else, Bob was a devoted father who took immense pride in the accomplishments of his children.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16 from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin, NJ. Bob will be buried alongside his parents in New Calvary Cemetery in Sayreville at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY; the Wilmot Cancer Center at Strong Health in Rochester, NY; or the VNS Hospice of Rochester, NY.
