Parlin
Robert (Bobby) Mandy, age 75, of Parlin, peacefully passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2020. Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, he was raised in in Parlin. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1964 and began a journey that provided him the opportunity to experience, and live in, parts of Europe and Asia. Prior to his leaving the Air Force in the early 1970s, his last duty station was in the Philippines where he was working in covert satellite surveillance of classified regions of the world. After the Air Force, he used the GI Bill to attend Columbia College in Colombia, Missouri where he studied travel administration. Upon graduation, he settled in Traer, Iowa where he began to work with an independent travel firm that arranged tours for private groups and small industries that again, provided him the opportunity to travel extensively. He returned to NJ in the late 1970s, living in different parts of the state and working for a travel firm based in New York City. Upon retirement, he returned to Parlin and for the last several years he has been a devoted son and caregiver to his mom, Julia.
Bobby was an avid fisherman and crabber. He was a voracious reader of historical non-fiction books especially those dealing with US History in the 20th century. He was able to speak to anyone about anything and thoroughly enjoyed a good conversation with young and old alike. He was also an accomplished cook, often found in the kitchen mixing up his own recipes especially his homemade soups. Mostly, Bobby enjoyed his family and time spent together whether playing cards, conversing on current affairs or hearing of the latest accomplishments of his nieces and nephews.
Bobby is predeceased by his father, William Mandy as well as his sister-in-law, Caroline Mandy.
Along with his mother Julia, he is survived by his brothers & their spouses, William Mandy of Sayvreville, NJ, Donald and Barby Mandy of Lawrenceville, NJ and John & Johanna Mandy of Monroe, NJ. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews and their families including Dawn Wolski and daughters Olivia and Abigayle, Jennifer and Kevin O’Keefe and their children Riley and David, Greg Mandy and his partner Shannon McGarry and their daughter Delaney, Sarah Mandy and Grace Mandy as well as numerous cousins, friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 19, 2020 9:15am from the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home with a funeral mass to follow at 10am at St. Nicholas Byzantine Church in Perth Amboy NJ. A private burial will take place at a later date. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday, October 18, 2020 from 1pm to 5pm.
