Obituary for Rev. Fr. Angelo John Michaels

Rev. Fr. Angelo J. Michaels, age 73, passed away Monday morning on January 15, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Born in Samos, Greece, he immigrated to the United States in 1964. He married the love of his life in 1971.
Fr. Michaels received his Bachelor of Science as well as his Masters at City University of New York. He is a graduate of Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he received his Masters of Divinity in 1983. He was ordained as a deacon in April of 1983, and a priest in October of 1983. Fr. Michaels served as a priest for 40 years. His first assignment was to Holy Transfiguration Parish in Ogden, Utah, where he spent 14 years. Fr. Michaels was awarded the Ofikion of Economos by His Eminence Bishop Isaiah in Ogden, Utah. Fr. Michaels was a Captain in the United States Air Force and served as a Chaplain with the 419th Tactical Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah for 10 years where he served along his fellow military members as a spiritual leader and the unit’s mobility officer. He was also a veteran of Desert Shield.
After serving at Holy Transfiguration Parish for 14 years, Fr. Michaels was then assigned to St. Demetrios of Perth Amboy in the Fall of 1996. He became a Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Patriarchate from his Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey. After serving St. Demetrios, Perth Amboy for 20 years, Fr. Angelo retired, but only for a short time! He was blessed with the part time assignment at St. Demetrios, Jersey City, NJ in 2016 and served there until his sudden passing.
Rev. Fr. Michaels is preceded in death by his parents, Ioannis and Maria Mixalios, and his sister Diana Marantidis.
Surviving him is his beloved wife of 53 years, Eva Michaels, his children, John Angelo Michaels, Maria and her husband Paul Grijalva, his six grandchildren, and his niece, Theologia Frantzis. He was a loving and supportive father and the very best Papou (grandfather).
Rev. Fr. Michaels loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and always making people smile. He will be truly missed by all that had the honor of knowing him.
Funeral services will begin with Orthros on Tuesday, January 24th at 8:30am and Divine Liturgy at 9:30 am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Jersey City. Funeral Service to begin at 11:00 am. An entombment will follow at Alpine Cemetery in Perth Amboy. Friends are invited to the church for hymns, Divine Liturgy, and the Funeral Liturgy on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Jersey City be made in Father’s loving memory.
May his memory always be eternal. Fr. Michaels will be forever missed.
