Obituary for Nancy Uszczak-Cuevas (Kroeger)

Sayreville/Lavallette
Nancy Kroeger Uszczak-Cuevas, aged 88, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023. Born in South Amboy on July 25, 1935, Nancy graduated from Sayreville (Wilson) High and earned her nursing degree from St. Peter’s Nursing School in 1955. For 66 years, she called Sayreville home until she relocated to Lavallette over two decades ago. Dedicating 45 years of her life to healthcare, Nancy served as a registered nurse with Sayreville Medical Group before embracing retirement. A devout communicant, she was a member of Our Lady of Victories Church in Sayreville and St. Pio Church in Lavallette.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, John F. and Pauline Kroeger, She also mourned the loss of her first husband, Francis J. Uszczak, in 1971, and her second husband, Augustin "Nito" Cuevas, in 2010. Additionally, Nancy bared the sorrow of saying goodbye to her stepson, Dr. Jose Cuevas, her nephew Robert Kroeger and her brothers, John and William Kroeger, along with their respective wives, Florence and Elizabeth Kroeger.
Surviving are her beloved daughter Lee Ann Grabicki and her finace Frederick Blohm, her cherished grandchildren Jack, Hannah, and Samuel. Her sister-in-law Lois Haque and her husband Nisar; her stepdaughters, Maria Aytona and Maria Spint, who all share in the collective loss. Along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will carry the memory of Nancy close to their hearts. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
“Nurse Nancy” dedicated the better part of her life to raising her daughter in the town where she was born. A young widow, she imparted the values of hard work to her daughter, all the while sharing her deep love for the ocean during blissful moments on the Jersey Shore, particularly the sands of Ocean Beach 2. Renowned for her kindness and penchant for collecting knick-knacks, Nancy's life took an unexpected turn when fate intervened, revealing the contact details of an old flame. Seizing the opportunity, Nancy initiated a pen pal correspondence that reignited a connection from her nursing school days with Dr. Cuevas, who resided in the faraway Philippines. This cross-continental relationship not only granted Nancy a second chance at love but also served as a living testament for others to believe in the magic of fairytales.
A heartfelt celebration of Nancy's life will be held in late spring, a fitting tribute to honor her memory at the place she cherished most—the beach at OB2. The memorial will be a poignant gathering to share stories, reminisce, and celebrate the life of a remarkable individual. Additionally, a memorial mass at OLV and a private burial at New Calvary Cemetery will take place during this time.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to https://www.teamgarbo.com/, an organization dedicated to mental health awareness and resources—a cause that holds a special place in Nancy's heart.
