Obituary for Mary Theresa Matthews (Fuhrman)

Sayreville
Mary T. Matthews, age 93, of Sayreville peacefully passed away at her home on Thursday, September 29, 2022, with her loving family at her side. Born in the Bronx and raised in Dumont, NJ to the late John and Mary Fuhrman, Mary settled in Sayreville for the past 67 years. After graduating St Cecilia high school in Englewood, Mrs. Matthews attended nursing school at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck where she received her RN degree. Shortly after, Mary started her family and became a proud, hard-working homemaker. She was a CCD educator and a Eucharistic Minister for Our Lady of Victories RC Church. She owned and taught at Matthews Ceramics in Sayreville for over 30 years. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband Howard P. Matthews in 2003, her daughter Susan Oliver, and her siblings Agnes Medvitz and John Fuhrman. Surviving are her 8 loving children and their spouses Mary and William Parisen of PA, Joan Laufrick of No. Brunswick, Stephen and Nancy Matthews of South River, Nancy and James Flynn of PA, Patricia and Michael Calorel of Lanoka Harbor, Carol and Theodore Broudy of FL, Michael and Jo Anne Matthews of South Amboy and Barbara Droulette of Sayreville; her son-in-law Glenn Oliver of Spotswood; as well as 22 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation hours will take place on Sunday from 2pm to 6pm at the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at 9:15am from the funeral home with a 10am mass at Our Lady of Victories RC Church in Sayreville. A private cremation will follow.
