Maria Sanzone, 86 years old of Sayreville, passed away on February 14, 2023 peacefully surrounded by her family. Born in Palermo, Italy to the late Mariana Madonia and Agostino Alessi, she came to America in 1955, living in Brooklyn, NY, where she was a seamstress for more than 20 years. She then lived on Staten Island, NY for 29 years before moving to Sayreville, New Jersey. She will be remembered for her authentic Italian cooking, utter selflessness, fierce determination to accomplish anything and love for her family. She is predeceased by her husband Anthony of 38 years, her parents, brother Giovanni Alessi, and grandson Jimmy Sanzone. Surviving are her four children and spouses James Sanzone and Doreen Sanzone, Augustine Sanzone, Maria DiGiovanni and Frank DiGiovanni and Maryann Macris and John Macris. She had 8 grandchildren: Kaitlin Sanzone (Ryan Inzana), Conner Sanzone (Alexandra), Cristina DiGiovanni, Maria Calanni (Phil), Giana DiGiovanni, Demetri Macris and Michael Macris, as well as 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place Friday at 8:45am from the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin with a 9:30am Mass at St Bernadette RC Church in Parlin. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 4pm to 8pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Maria’s name to American Alzheimer’s Association ALZ.org.
