Obituary for Manuel DaRocha

It is with great sadness that the family of Mr. Manuel DaRocha, of South River, NJ announce his passing on Sunday, July 2nd 2023 due to illness, peacefully in his home. He was 80 years old. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Manuel faced his illness with strength and grace and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final day, he was surrounded by his children and grandchildren whom he adored more than anything else in the world.

Born on October 26, 1942 in Gafanha da Boa Hora, Portugal, Manuel had immigrated to the United States in 1972. He planted his roots in South River, NJ where he began his career in road construction and joined the small but growing Portuguese Community. Soon thereafter Manuel became a founding member of the South River Portuguese Club, which stands strong today with hundreds of members and remains a vital establishment within the Portuguese Community. His hard working beliefs and ambition didn’t stop there, within several years Manuel became an owner of a small construction company which provided employment for many fellow immigrants for over the span of 35 years. After retiring, Manuel found his true passion by spending more time with his growing family and returning to his home in Portugal for several months at a time to truly enjoy the fruits of his labor. He was a devout Roman Catholic parishioner of the Corpus Christi Church in South River.

Surviving family is Manuel’s cherished wife of 57 years, Rosa. His son, Manny with wife Aracele and daughter, Jacqueline with her husband, Miguel. His grandchildren, who were his true treasures, Alex, Andrew, Devon, Luke, Grace and Samuel. Manuel’s sister Rosa, who resides in Portugal with her husband.

Calling hours at the Maliszewski Memorial Home, 218 Whitehead Ave, South River 08882 are Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral services Thursday begin 9:15am at the Maliszewski Funeral Home with a 10am Funeral Mass at Corpus Christi R.C. Church, South River.
