Obituary for Josephine "Josie" Kanaval (Milko)

Josephine “Josie” Kanaval (Milko), age 90, of South River, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 9, 2021 at Sunrise Assisted Living in East Brunswick, with her loving family at her side. Born and raised in South River to the late Nicholas and Anna Milko, Josephine was a proud lifelong borough resident. Before her retirement, she worked as an operator for Decorated Metal in Milltown for many years. Mrs. Kanaval was a communicant of St. Mary of Ostrabrama RC Church in South River and a member of the South River Seniors who was dedicated to her church and her community. She will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

As an accomplished ballroom dancer, Josie’s love of music and dance was only surpassed by the joys of family.

Josephine is predeceased by her beloved husband Michael Kanaval, her dear son Michael Kanaval, Jr., her brothers Edward and Joseph Milko, and her sister Blanche Salatowski.

Surviving is her daughter-in-law JoAnne and husband Brian Gibney of Manalapan; her grandchildren and their spouses Michelle and Kevin Middaugh of PA, Joseph and Stephanie Kanaval of Cranford, and Jessica and Kevin Mc Keever of Freehold; her 7 great-grandchildren Graydon, Mackenzie, Kyle, Jack, Nora, Patrick, and Saoirse; her 2 nieces Arlene Certo of FL and Barbara Misiewicz of Sayreville, her nephew Joseph Milko, Jr. of Monroe, and her brother-in-law Robert Kanaval of South River.

Funeral services are scheduled for 9:30am on Friday from the M.A. Maliszewski Funeral Home, 218 Whitehead Avenue, South River with a 10am mass offered at St. Mary of Ostrabrama RC Church. Burial will immediately follow at Holy Cross Burial Park in South Brunswick.

Calling hours at the funeral home will take place on Thursday from 4pm to 8pm.
