Obituary for Joseph E. Chaplin

Joseph E. Chaplin
Parlin
Joseph Eugene Chaplin, a Parlin, NJ resident for 51 years, died September 18, 2019 in Holmdel, NJ. He was 89.

Born Joseph Eugene Czaplicki on March 5, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to Polish immigrants, Josef & Sophia (Kuklinksa) Czaplicki, he had three elder siblings, now deceased: Henry Chaplin, Adele Chaplin and Jan Chaplin. For assimilation purposes, his last name was anglicized in 1954.

Joe grew up in Brooklyn, where he delivered newspapers and shined shoes in his youth. He later tried the auto-mechanic trade. Being of a determined nature, he was attracted to the discipline and adventure of the of the US Navy, and joined in 1950. He was honorably discharged in July of 1954 after serving on the USS Palau (CVE-122) during the Korean War.

Once back in Brooklyn, Joe began attending St. John’s University (Brooklyn), and became captain of the basketball team and involved in writing of the college newsletter. While he studied for his degree, he also worked full time and met Jane (Martin) at Recordack in Brooklyn. On June 2, 1956, Joe married Jane in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Brooklyn, NY.

While still in Brooklyn, Joe continued to work in communications and business, and completed his undergraduate. After marriage and with a growing family, Joe went on to earn his MBA at St. John’s (Queens, NY) in 1964.

Desiring a suburban yard for his family, he moved from Brooklynn to Parlin, NJ. He and Jane moved to Eric Court in 1966. It was a home he took great pride in, and here he and Jane had their fourth child, Robert.

Joseph worked several communications and systems positions in firms like McCalls, and Native Textiles. He traveled often for work and loved the diverse cultures and experiences. Eventually he became responsible for data management and this peaked his interest in computers. By 1980’s Joseph established Automated Data Resources in New York City, a firm that sold magnetic media and was one of the first distributors of the IBM ‘personal computer’ and the Apple “Mac” computer. Joe commuted into New York City daily, and as the industry grew, so did his firm. In the later 1980s he established Chaplin Associates, Limited. This firm sold early networked computer systems and ‘magnetic media’, and consulted to develop new processes for various financial, travel and publication businesses. He also developed procedural practices for firms, and trained various clients in these systems and data management.

Joe was an avid fan of the NY Giants ever since the Polo Grounds in New York. He enjoyed taking his kids to these games and tailgating. He also enjoyed a good read, and usually could be seen with a book in hand, and ear buds in his ear listening to a game!

He was a diligent man and fun… meticulous in detail, always cleaning, managing his home, teaching his kids to throw a ball, advising friends on financial matters. He was interested and supportive of various civic activities. He was known for his love of food and very much loved for his sense of humor. He’d do silly things like offering his kids a banana when they visited home, do a little polka step and hoot in happiness, or crack everyone up with his overt anger at rascally squirrels. Even in his last couple of months, when Joe had spurts of energy, he’d tell jokes to the staff in his nursing home.

His death is preceded by his wife, Jane in February 2016, his parents, and step mother, his siblings, two nieces, three nephews and one great-nephew.

Celebrating his life are his children Susan (and Gary Fisher) of South Carolina, Richard Chaplin of Georgia, Karen (and Kim Kruse Andersen) of Denmark, and Robert Chaplin of Georgia. Three grandchildren, Alyssa Chaplin (of Georgia), and Kristian and Emma Kruse Andersen (of Denmark).
