Obituary for John J Dooling

John J. Dooling, age 77, of Sayreville, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 6, 2023 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge. Born on Staten Island to the late James and Helen Dooling, he had resided in Sayreville for the past 33 years.

Before his passing, John had a lengthy and distinguished career in educational publishing, with various editorial positions at a number of publishing houses, including Silver Burdett Ginn in Morristown, NJ; Modern Curriculum Press in Parsippany, NJ; and Scott Foresman, also in Parsippany, where he served as Vice President and Publisher. John honored his country by serving in the United States Air Force from 1969-1973, and was honorably discharged with rank of Captain. He was a well-educated man, earning a BA and MA from Seton Hall University, and a PhD in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania. Most notably, John was a recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship.

Surviving are John’s loving wife of 36 years, Deborah, their son James, his sister and brother-in law JoAnn and Daniel Cosgrove, as well as numerous cousins and friends. He is also survived by his beloved rescue cats, on whom he doted. He will be truly missed.
In his spare time, and especially after his retirement several years ago, John indulged his lifelong love of Broadway and classic films. He also developed a passion for art, and was a frequent visitor to various museums. In addition, John loved to travel, and was always planning his next adventure.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4pm to 8pm at the Maliszewski Memorial Home, 121 Main St, Sayreville. Funeral services at the funeral home will take place on Tuesday at 8:30am with a 9am Funeral Mass being offered at Our Lady of Victories R.C. Church, Sayreville. Burial to follow at Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island.
