Obituary for Gerald T. Hammer
Gerald T. Hammer, age 87, of Sayreville, passed away peacefully at home Monday, June 5, 2023.
Gerald was born in East Orange, NJ to the late Harold and Beatrice Hammer. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He married the love of his life Elizabeth (Huegel) Hammer 64 years ago and together they raised a beautiful family. In addition to his wife Elizabeth, he is survived by their four children - Richard Hammer and wife Brenda, Linda and husband John (Mollica), Lisa and husband Robert (Layer), and Laura Hammer; five grandchildren - Ryan, Tyler, Samantha, John, and Kelly; as well as eight great grandchildren.
Although Gerald was an only child, his dad was one of eleven siblings so there were many aunts, uncles and cousins that he was close to, particularly his cousin Robert.
Gerald worked as a contract manager for Prudential Life Insurance in Newark, NJ for 42 years. After retiring he was able to enjoy more precious time with his family and to pursue his hobbies which included working around the yard, reading and occasionally playing golf.
While he faced several challenging health issues over the years, he was fortunate to always have the loving support of his wife, as well as his daughter Laura, who dedicated most of her adult life to love and care for him. And of course, his beloved calico cat “Mickey”, who he adored, was always by his side.
He will be remembered for all the love and heart he shared with his family and friends. He truly loved each of them and if you knew him – you knew it.
He will be missed dearly and will never, ever, be forgotten.
A private burial service was held Thursday, June 8th at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.
