Obituary for Edward J Lennan

Edward Lennan, age 76, passed away Saturday, October 21, at Robert Wood Johnson
University Hospital in New Brunswick, with his family by his side. Born in Jersey City to the late
John and Genevieve Lennan, he lived in Sayreville for the past 48 years. Before his retirement
in 2003, Ed spent his career working for Verizon. He served in the United States Air Force for
four years until his Honorable Discharge in 1970.
Ed was a fantastic athlete and spent his life being active. For years he was an avid runner and
ran both the New York City and Jersey Shore Marathons multiple times, and completed a
triathalon. Ed was a long time member of the Sayerville Track Club and ran the Sayreville Five
Mile Road Race for many years. Ed participated when the Olympic Torch came through
Sayreville in 1980 and joined the athletes running with the torch. When his running days were
behind him, he turned his passion to cycling. The year he turned 40 he rode his bicycle from
Sayreville to Cape May with his best friend and fellow Sayreville resident George Giovenco. Ed
and George also rode in the Bayonne to Belmar bike race and were proud to lead the pack as
the riders came down Rt. 9 through Sayreville. As he got older, Ed stayed active by walking 5-7
miles a day at his favorite park in South Amboy.
Ed was a wonderful father and grandfather and loved spending time at his grandchildren’s
events. He thoroughly enjoyed every football, baseball, soccer, and basketball games, tennis
matches, school plays and concerts, and somewhat tolerated Maddie’s recital every year. He
was the best Pop Pop and his grandchildren loved spending time with him.
He was very close to his three children and spoke with them every day. He was always there
anytime they needed him and he would do anything for them.
But above all else he was a loving husband. He lived each day for his beloved wife Diane. She
brought him so much joy and happiness. They were deeply in love for the 54 years they were
married. Ed took care of Diane while she was ill the last two years of her life. When she passed
away in December, the brightest light in his life went out and he was not the same. While they
miss him terribly, his family is happy they are together again.
Ed is predeceased by his wife Diane and his grandson Jack Edward Albright. He is survived by
his children and their spouses, Colleen Albright, Kristen & Kevin Andree, and Daniel & Trish
Lennan, his grandchildren Meghan, Patrick, Connor, Cailin, Maddie, and Shawn as well as his
in-laws Joe and Cele Kwiatkowski, loving cousins, nephews and their families, and many dear
friends.
