Edward J. “Red” Tauber, age 85, of Sayreville, peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and his dear caretaker Nana Bonsu. Born and raised in Perth Amboy to the late Edward and Sophie Tauber, Ed lived in Sayreville for the past 50 years where he raised his family. He was a proud graduate of Seton Hall University, receiving a BA in Accounting. He assisted many Seminarians over the years, two of whom became like family to him; Rev. Stephen Saffron and Rev. Gregory McIlhenny. Before his retirement, Mr. Tauber was employed by the Middlesex County Board of Social Services as their Fiscal Officer. Ed was very active in the community as an usher with Our Lady of Victories, a 4th Degree Knight with Sayreville Knights of Columbus Council #2061, an integral member of the Sayreville Lions Club, a Melvin Jones Fellow and most importantly served as President of MAVIS of NJ for 30 years. When growing up in Perth Amboy, the “gentle giant” was very active in basketball and softball with the Meade Street Aces, whom he loved dearly. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Edward is predeceased by his dear son Eddie and his brother Richard. Surviving is his beloved wife of nearly 60 years Mary Tauber (Kopervas) of Sayreville; his daughters and their spouses Mary and Roy E. De Lisa and Patricia and Michael D. Kreitner, both of Melrose; his sisters Lucy Lane of Oregon and Claire Tauber of Perth Amboy; his Godsons Christopher Metzger and Dr. Edward Kalinowski; Madeleine Cerritto; the Ajpek family of Hlohovic, Slovakia, as well as many loving nieces and nephews and their children.

Funeral services are scheduled for 9:15am on Thursday from the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin with 10am Mass at Our Lady of Victories RC Church. Burial will immediately follow at New Calvary Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will take place on Wednesday from 4pm to 8pm. Despite COVID-19 regulations, 100 guests can be accommodated in the building at once. Masks must be worn at all times.

As president of MAVIS of NJ, Ed helped hundreds of blind students with their musical education. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ed’s memory to MAVIS of NJ, PO Box 173, Woodbridge, NJ 07095.
