Obituary for Dorothy Hanlon

Dorothy Ann Hulmes Hanlon “Dot”, 87 from Jersey City; raised her family in Old Bridge and retired in Freehold, New Jersey passed away surrounded by her family Friday, December 10th.

Dot, a loving mother of five children, had a special gift of making everyone around her feel welcomed and instantly part of the family. Her love for bringing family and friends together led her to organize numerous block parties and start Santa visiting on Christmas Eve, a tradition which continues to this day.
She enjoyed playing cards, crafting and creating DIY projects. She was an avid reader whose love for books made her a wonderful library volunteer. Her passion for music was seen in her gigs as “DJ Dot” and the entertainment coordinator at the Villages’ community center. Known to most as Nana, she was most proud of her greatest achievement of all, creating such a close-knit and loving family. She loved being with her grand and great-grandkids, “watch out, the tickle-bug’s gonna get ya”. A Nana hug always made the heart feel good.

Dot was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, William Hanlon; her loving parents, William and Elizabeth Hulmes; her sisters, Caroline Hinesley and Betty Hulmes; grandchildren, Ki Braine, Inky Norek and Joey Ambrosio, and great-grandchild Brody Hayhurst. Dot is survived by her children, Michael Hanlon, Laura and Frank Norek, Patti Lee and Stephen Baker, Diane and Joe Ambrosio, and Susan Hanlon; her grandkids, Kelsey Hanlon, Tommy Baker, Erica Hanlon, Nikki Norek, Jaclyn and Kyle Hayhurst, Patti and R.J. Read, Timmy Norek, Katie and Sean Areia, Brian and Lindsay Quigley, Jenny Quigley and Mike Braine; her great-grandkids, Parker, Easton and Max Read, Callyn, Jordyn and Clayton Hayhurst,, Connor and Caiden Quigley, Annabelle and Liliana Areia, Teagan Braine and Gavin Braine.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks that donations be made to the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation.
The Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation’s mission is to increase awareness and accurate diagnosis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) and related inherited neuropathies, support people living with CMT and their families with critical information to improve quality of life, and fund research that will lead to treatments and cures.
