Obituary for Althea Mazar

South Amboy, New Jersey

“The Lovely” Althea Mazar, age 68, of South Amboy passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. Born in 1954, she was a lifelong resident of New Jersey, and had lived in South Amboy since 1987. She worked with attorney George Gussis for 38 years before retiring recently to begin her valiant battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Althea, a longtime Multiple Sclerosis survivor, was a talented mellophone player who was introduced to the drum and bugle corps community as a teenager when she performed with the Edison Saints junior corps. She won several individual contests in her youth and was among the first women to join the Reading Buccaneers (Pennsylvania) brass line, where she served as business manager of the corps. She marched with the New York Skyliners and, for many years, with the Melrose Blackhawks, a parade corps from Sayreville. She was inducted into both the New Jersey Drum Corps Hall of Fame and the Reading Buccaneers Hall of Fame. Until recently, Althea was a member of the Audubon Bon Bons chorus, the New York Skyliners chorus, and the Shore Voices chorus of Middletown, New Jersey, as well as a member of the Reading Buccaneers Alumni Corps. Althea was also an avid skier for much of her adult life. She will be greatly missed by the many friends who shared these passions and by the family members who loved her.

Daughter of the late Stephen and Evelyn Mazar, formerly of Edison, New Jersey and later Beverly Hills, Florida, Althea is predeceased by her partner of 29 years, Thomas “Bucky” Swan, and her brother, Peter Mazar. Surviving are her oldest brother, Tibor Mazar, of Blytheville, Arkansas, her nieces Laura Meanwell (Mark) and Elizabeth Phillips (Matthew), as well as her great niece and nephews and many loving cousins, friends and neighbors.

The family is grateful to all the many friends who contributed to Althea’s cancer treatment fund and to her care this past year. Memorial contributions may be made to one of Althea’s beloved choirs or drum corps, the National MS Society, or to the charity of your choice.

After a private burial, family and friends are invited to gather in New Jersey for a celebration of Althea’s life on Saturday, February 18th, 2023 from 2pm to 6pm at The American Legion Post 87- 314 Berry St. Woodbridge, NJ.

So that we may share them at the February gathering, please send photographs and memories of Althea to the family by emailing her niece, Liz Phillips, at lizmazarphillips@gmail.com.
