Obituary for Joseph "Mikhas Kavyl" Leshchanka

Joseph Leshchanka aka Mikhas Kavyl, age 101 of South River, passed away Thursday April 6, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Slutsk, Belarus he had resided in South River for the past 67 years. Before his retirement he was employed with Ford Motor Company and more recently Alphaduct Wire & Cable in New Brunswick. Mikhas was a well known Belarusian author and poet and very active in the Belarusian American community. He was also a founding member of St. Euphrosynia Belarusian Church and a member of the church choir. Mikhas was proud and grateful for his life in America but his heart always belonged to Belarus.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Sonia (Werhun) Leshchanka of South River; his adoring children and their spouses George & Deborah of Edison and Michael & Sandra of Hillsborough; and his 4 loving grandchildren Steven, Melissa and husband Joseph Pinto, Matthew, and Danika.
Calling hours will be held at the M.A. Maliszewski Funeral Home, 218 Whitehead Avenue South River, NJ on Monday from 2pm to 4pm & 7pm to 9pm with a Panahida service scheduled for 7pm. Funeral services will take place 10am on Tuesday at St. Euphrosynia Belarusian Church followed by burial at St. Euphrosynia Cemetery, both of which are in South River.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mikhas’ name to St. Euphrosynia Church, 284 Whitehead Avenue, South River, NJ 08882. Letters of condolence, directions and completed arrangements may be found by visiting www.maliszewskifuneralhome.com.
