Carmela Christina Mauro, age 99 of the Parlin section of Sayreville passed away Friday February 3, 2017 at Saint Peters University Hospital, New Brunswick with her devoted family at her side. Born in Brooklyn she has resided in Parlin for the past 62 years. Mrs. Mauro was an accomplished singer who sang Opera for Salmaggi’s Opera Company in Brooklyn also sang country western in area clubs for over 30 years and was still singing at the Sayreville Senior Center where she was known as The Sayreville Sweetheart. During World War II Carmela worked in the defense plant in New York making Binoculars and was a communicant of Our Lady of Victories R. C. Church in Sayreville.

She is predeceased by her husband Ralph F. Mauro in 1961 and her grandson Jason Ralph Vargas in 1983. Surviving are her daughter Rochelle Vargas and her husband Genaro with whom she lived, her grandchildren Cristina Chan and her husband Patrick of Sayreville and Carlos Jason Vargas of New Mexico, and her great granddaughters Natalie and Victoria.

Funeral services will be held Thursday 8:45am from the Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home 15 Cherry Lane Parlin followed by a 9:30am mass at Our Lady of Victories R. C. Church in Sayreville with burial to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin.
